The Manufacturing Process

Next, these materials are heated in a rotary kiln, creating a substance called “clinker”. This clinker is then broken down into a powder and often mixed with sulfate materials like gypsum. The result is cement.

Hard and sturdy, concrete is formed by mixing cement, water, and elements of crushed rock and sand. The addition of water triggers a process known as hydration, leading to the materials binding together to form what we recognize as concrete.

The creation of concrete takes place inside specialized plants. These come in two forms typically: ready-mix and central mix plants. Each type has its unique role. The method includes combining water, aggregate, cement, and various extra ingredients. This mixing must be done just in time, so that everything blends right before it’s given out for building tasks. After putting it into shapes or molds, the concrete rests under certain conditions to harden. This process, known as curing, provides the concrete with its toughness, making it good for many building purposes.

 

Applications in Construction

Cement’s physical characteristics allow it to solidify underground, making it key in creating foundational structures, such as footings and retaining walls. This hardening feature of cement is especially useful in subsoil construction work.

Cement serves a major role in making mortar for masonry. It’s the binder that combines sand and crushed stone, making it crucial for building stone and brick structures.

Concrete sees extensive use in building bridges, highways, and tunnels due to its strength and weight-bearing capacity. Its ability to withstand multiple forces makes it a preferred choice for intense construction activities.
